Media entrepreneur and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dele Momodu, has clarified comments attributed to him ahead of the 2027 general elections, insisting that he never said Nigerians should not support former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
Momodu made the clarification amid renewed political debates and interpretations of his recent remarks on opposition alliances and leadership choices for 2027. He said his position had been misrepresented, stressing that he respects the right of Nigerians to support any candidate of their choice, including Obi.
According to him, his comments were aimed at encouraging broad-based discussions on unity, strategy and inclusiveness within the opposition, rather than discouraging support for any individual aspirant. He maintained that Nigeria’s current challenges require collective engagement and mature political conversations, not selective narratives.
“I never said no one should back Peter Obi,” Momodu said, adding that attempts to portray him as opposed to Obi’s political ambitions were inaccurate and misleading. He noted that Obi remains a significant figure in Nigeria’s political landscape and commands the loyalty of millions of supporters, a reality that cannot be ignored in any serious 2027 calculation.
Momodu, a former presidential aspirant himself, reiterated his long-standing advocacy for opposition collaboration to effectively challenge the ruling party. He warned that internal divisions, miscommunication and deliberate misinterpretations could weaken the chances of opposition parties ahead of the next general election.
The PDP stalwart also urged political actors and supporters to focus on issues of governance, economic recovery, security and national unity, rather than engaging in personality-driven disputes. He said Nigerians are more interested in credible solutions to their daily struggles than in political infighting.
As conversations around 2027 continue to gather momentum, Momodu’s clarification adds to the growing discourse on possible alliances, zoning considerations and the role of influential political figures in shaping the opposition’s path forward.
