The Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, on Tuesday presented an award to the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, and the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Said Ahmad, at the National Teachers Summit 2026 held in Abuja.

The summit, themed “Empowering Teachers, Strengthening the System: A National Agenda for Education Transformation and Sustainability,” brought together education stakeholders, policymakers, development partners and teachers’ unions from across the country to chart a new course for Nigeria’s education sector.

Dr. Alausa said the awards recognised the First Lady and Prof. Ahmad for their outstanding contributions to education development, teacher empowerment and policy reforms aimed at strengthening learning outcomes nationwide. Speaking at the event, Senator Oluremi Tinubu reaffirmed her commitment to promoting quality education, inclusive access and child development across Nigeria. She said teachers play a critical role in shaping the values, skills and future of the nation, and called for sustained support for their professional growth, welfare and working conditions.

“Our teachers are the foundation of any meaningful education reform. When we empower teachers, we empower the nation,” the First Lady said, urging governments at all levels to prioritise policies that protect and uplift educators.

Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Said Ahmad, described the summit as timely, noting that Nigeria’s education system requires coordinated reforms focused on teacher training, curriculum relevance and institutional strengthening. She said the federal government was committed to building a resilient education system capable of meeting global standards while addressing local realities.

The summit featured plenary sessions, policy dialogues and technical workshops on teacher professional development, digital learning, school leadership, education financing and sustainability. Stakeholders at the forum emphasised the need for improved funding, better infrastructure, digital integration and stronger accountability frameworks to support teachers and learners.

Education experts and union leaders at the event called for improved remuneration, continuous training and safer school environments, stressing that teacher motivation remains central to improving learning outcomes.

The National Teachers Summit 2026 concluded with a call for a unified national agenda that prioritises teacher empowerment as the foundation for long-term education transformation and sustainable national development.
