Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has described the death of Senator Barinada Mpigi, who represented Rivers South-East Senatorial District, as a significant loss not only to the Ogoni people but to Nigeria as a whole.
Wike made the remarks during a visit to the widow, Patricia Mpigi, and her children in London on Thursday, leading a delegation of Rivers State leaders to offer condolences and support. The delegation assured the family of continued assistance and promised to ensure a befitting burial for the late senator, who passed away at 64 after a brief illness.
Accompanying Wike were his sons, Jordan and Joaquin, Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, Senators Magnus Abe, Allwell Onyesoh, and Olaka Nwogu, Rivers State PDP Chairman Aaron Chukwuemeka, Felix Nweke, Kenneth Chikere, and Hon. Dum Deekor.

Speaking to the family, Wike recalled his personal and political ties with Mpigi, noting the late senator’s unwavering loyalty and dedication to his constituents. “There is nobody among us that does not know the impact of Barinada Mpigi. When he says he is your friend, he is your friend. He stands with his friends through thick and thin,” Wike said, describing Mpigi as a pillar in Rivers State politics.
He acknowledged the difficulty of losing a figure of Mpigi’s stature, adding that the delegation would ensure the senator receives a befitting farewell. “We will play our own part. We will not forget Bari. Like I have said, it is our own loss, we will be there with you,” the Minister told the widow and children.
Wike further reflected on the inevitability of death and the need for strength in the face of such losses. “God gives, God takes. I believe He will give all of you the strength, just as we pray that God will also give us the strength to bear this irreparable loss,” he said.
Responding, Patricia Mpigi expressed appreciation for the Minister and the delegation, thanking them for their presence and support during the difficult period.
Senator Mpigi’s death has elicited widespread tributes from political leaders, constituents, and colleagues, who have praised his service, integrity, and commitment to the people of Rivers State and Nigeria at large.
