President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday swore in Tunji Disu as the 23rd Inspector-General of Police, charging him to strengthen internal security, deepen professionalism within the Force and restore public confidence in policing across the country.
The brief ceremony, held at the State House in Abuja, formally ushered in a new leadership for the Nigeria Police Force at a time of heightened security concerns in parts of the country.
President Tinubu urged the new police chief to prioritise intelligence-led policing, inter-agency collaboration and strict discipline among officers. He stressed that Nigerians expect a police force that is responsive, accountable and firmly committed to protecting lives and property.
Disu takes over the mantle of leadership with a track record in operations, investigations and strategic command positions. Before his appointment, he served in various capacities, including as Commissioner of Police in Lagos State and later as head of key tactical and investigative units within the Force.
In his remarks after taking the oath of office, the new IGP pledged loyalty to the Constitution and commitment to reform-driven policing. He assured the President and Nigerians that his tenure would focus on operational efficiency, welfare of officers and improved community relations.
“We will work to build a police force that earns the trust of the people,” Disu said, noting that modern policing must be intelligence-driven and technology-based.
Security analysts say his appointment comes at a critical period marked by banditry, kidnapping and communal tensions in several regions. Observers expect the new police chief to consolidate ongoing reforms while addressing operational gaps, particularly in rural and conflict-prone areas.
Disu’s career spans decades within the Nigeria Police Force. He has undergone local and international training in law enforcement, counterterrorism and public safety management. Colleagues describe him as firm, operationally sound and results-oriented.
His swearing-in marks a significant leadership transition within the Force and signals the administration’s renewed emphasis on internal security as a cornerstone of governance.
The Inspector-General of Police is the highest-ranking officer in the Nigeria Police Force and is responsible for its administration, operations and strategic direction nationwide.
