The Nigeria Police Council has ratified the appointment of Olatunji Rilwan Disu as the new Inspector-General of Police, with Bola Ahmed Tinubu set to swear him in on Wednesday.
The decision was reached at a high-level meeting of the council presided over by the President, where members unanimously endorsed Disu’s elevation to the nation’s top policing position. His appointment follows the retirement of his predecessor and comes at a time of heightened security concerns across parts of the country.
Disu, a seasoned officer with decades of experience in law enforcement, has served in various operational and administrative capacities, earning commendations for professionalism and strategic leadership. Until his appointment, he held key commands where he spearheaded reforms and coordinated major crime-fighting initiatives.

Sources at the meeting said the council expressed confidence in Disu’s ability to reposition the Nigeria Police Force to effectively tackle insecurity, strengthen community policing, and improve public trust.
In his remarks, President Tinubu reportedly charged the new IGP to prioritize intelligence-driven policing, welfare of officers, and inter-agency collaboration to combat terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other violent crimes.
Disu is expected to unveil a comprehensive action plan after his swearing-in, outlining strategies to modernize operations, enhance accountability, and leverage technology in crime prevention.
Security analysts say his leadership will be closely watched as Nigerians expect decisive action to restore safety and stability nationwide.
