Emmanuel Ogidi

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Emmanuel Ogidi, has called for a thorough investigation into the recent attack on members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Edo State, describing the incident as a “bad omen” for Nigeria’s democracy.

Speaking to journalists on Thursday, Ogidi condemned the attack on prominent political figures, including former 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and former All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman John Odigie-Oyegun, as well as other ADC leaders. He stressed that such hostilities are unacceptable, particularly as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections.

Ogidi urged law enforcement agencies and relevant authorities to carry out a comprehensive and impartial investigation to identify the perpetrators and ensure they face justice. He warned that failure to address politically motivated violence could undermine public confidence in democratic institutions and electoral processes.

The PDP chieftain expressed concern over the escalation of political tensions in Edo State, emphasizing that attacks on political opponents threaten not only individual safety but also the broader democratic framework. “This incident is a serious warning. Democracy cannot thrive in an environment where leaders and their supporters are attacked for participating in political activities,” Ogidi said.

He called on political parties and stakeholders to promote peaceful engagement and dialogue, urging all political actors to uphold the principles of civility, tolerance, and respect for the rule of law. According to Ogidi, safeguarding the political space is critical to ensuring credible elections and fostering national unity.

The attack, which has drawn national attention, has been widely criticized by civil society organizations, election monitors, and political commentators, who described it as a threat to free political expression and participation. Analysts say that preventing such incidents is essential to maintaining public trust in Nigeria’s electoral system.

Ogidi concluded by reiterating the need for swift action to investigate and prosecute those responsible, warning that political violence must not be allowed to derail Nigeria’s democratic progress. He emphasized that credible elections and the protection of political freedoms are fundamental to the nation’s stability and growth.
