The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has announced that the National Identification Number (NIN) will now serve as the official Tax Identification Number for individual Nigerians, while the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) registration number has been adopted as the primary tax identifier for businesses.

FIRS disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday, describing the policy as a major step toward harmonising national databases, improving tax administration and expanding Nigeria’s tax net. The move is aimed at simplifying compliance, reducing duplication of identification systems and strengthening revenue mobilisation.

According to the Service, linking tax records to the NIN for individuals will make it easier to track taxable activities, eliminate multiple tax identities and enhance transparency across federal and state tax systems. For businesses, the use of CAC numbers as tax identifiers is expected to streamline corporate tax registration and ensure consistency between business incorporation and taxation records.

FIRS said the initiative aligns with ongoing reforms under the federal government’s drive to modernise public finance management and improve the ease of doing business in Nigeria. By leveraging existing national databases, the Service noted that taxpayers would no longer need to undergo separate and repetitive registration processes to obtain tax identification numbers.

The revenue agency emphasised that the policy would also support efforts to curb tax evasion by improving data sharing among relevant government institutions, including the National Identity Management Commission and the Corporate Affairs Commission.

FIRS assured Nigerians that adequate measures have been put in place to protect personal and corporate data, adding that the integration process would be implemented in phases to ensure a smooth transition.

The Service urged individuals and business owners to ensure their NIN and CAC records are accurate and up to date, noting that this would facilitate seamless tax compliance and access to government services.

According to FIRS, the adoption of NIN and CAC numbers as tax identifiers marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s tax reforms, aimed at building a more efficient, transparent and inclusive tax system capable of supporting sustainable national development.
