The Minister of Information has called on Nigerian youths to take a proactive role in combating fake news and misinformation, stressing that the spread of unverified information poses a serious threat to national unity, security, and social cohesion.
The minister made the remarks while addressing participants at a youth engagement forum, highlighting the central role young people play in shaping public discourse and influencing societal behavior through digital platforms. He warned that the proliferation of false information can fuel confusion, panic, and mistrust, particularly in sensitive national matters.
“Unverified news has the potential to undermine the stability of our communities and our nation,” the minister said, urging young Nigerians to exercise vigilance and responsibility when sharing information online. He emphasized the importance of verifying sources, understanding context, and promoting factual content as essential tools in safeguarding national interests.

In his address, the minister encouraged the youth to cultivate digital literacy skills, noting that informed citizens are better equipped to identify and counter false narratives. He stressed that social media, while a powerful tool for communication, carries responsibility and should be used as a platform for constructive engagement rather than spreading misinformation.
To strengthen efforts against fake news, the minister announced plans for nationwide awareness campaigns aimed at educating citizens on responsible online behavior. He also revealed that the Ministry of Information would collaborate with technology companies, civil society groups, and media organizations to monitor, flag, and curtail the spread of misleading content.
Participants at the forum expressed strong support for the initiatives, pledging to promote responsible digital behavior within their networks. Several youth representatives highlighted the role of peer influence in creating a culture of fact-checking and accountability online.
Experts have noted that misinformation and fake news are major challenges globally, often affecting elections, public health campaigns, and community relations. In Nigeria, the issue has been compounded by the rapid growth of social media and mobile internet access, making youth engagement critical in tackling the problem effectively.
The minister concluded by reminding participants that the fight against misinformation is not only a civic responsibility but also a patriotic duty. He encouraged young Nigerians to act as ambassadors of truth, using their skills and creativity to build a more informed, united, and resilient society.
By empowering youths to take the lead, the ministry aims to create a generation of responsible digital citizens who contribute positively to national development while curbing the harmful effects of false narratives.
