Iran’s Supreme Leader Khamenei Killed in U.S.–Israel Strikes

Iranian state media confirmed that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, 86, was killed on Saturday in a coordinated military attack by the United States and Israel targeting key leadership sites in Tehran.

The strike, described as the most ambitious assault on Iranian targets in decades, reportedly also claimed the lives of Khamenei’s daughter, son-in-law, granddaughter, and daughter-in-law.

The attack reportedly eliminated several top Iranian defense and security officials, including Ali Shamkhani, a senior advisor to Khamenei, and Mohammad Pakpour, head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The Israel Defense Forces stated that their operation targeted seven senior figures in Iran’s defense leadership, listing officials such as Minister of Defense Aziz Nasirzadeh and the Chief of Military Bureau Mohammad Shirazi among the casualties.

Iranian state television described Khamenei’s death as occurring at his office while “performing his assigned duties,” underscoring his role at the forefront of governance and security. The government declared 40 days of public mourning and seven days of national holidays to commemorate the leader.

U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed the operation and called Khamenei “one of the most evil people in history,” warning that further precision strikes would continue as part of efforts to neutralize Iran’s nuclear capabilities. Israeli officials reinforced that the strikes were aimed at decapitating Iran’s military and paramilitary command structure.

The deaths have created an immediate leadership vacuum in Tehran. As Supreme Leader, Khamenei had ultimate authority over Iran’s military, judiciary, and political decisions for more than three decades. Analysts warn that the absence of a clear successor heightens uncertainty, raising concerns over potential power struggles and regional instability.

Reports indicate that retaliatory actions may already be underway, with Iranian forces reportedly launching missile and drone strikes at U.S. and Israeli positions in the Middle East. The escalation has drawn international attention, with global leaders urging restraint to prevent wider conflict.

The strike marks a historic escalation in U.S.–Israel–Iran relations, fundamentally altering the balance of power in the region and triggering fears of broader instability in the Middle East.
