Senator Oluremi Tinubu

First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu has challenged wives of State Governors to lead impactful, independent interventions addressing social vices and economic challenges in their states. She made the remarks at the 1st quarterly 2026 meeting of Wives of State Governors under the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI).

Tinubu emphasized youth empowerment, women’s skill development, and grassroots programs tailored to regional needs. Drawing from her tenure as Lagos First Lady, she highlighted projects like the Spelling Bee competition, Musical Fiesta, and the Leadership Academy for girls, encouraging similar self-reliance drives across states. “It’s like giving birth to a baby the teething stage and learning how to walk. After a while, the baby is supposed to walk unaided, and that is what I want to see,” she said.

She praised successful state-specific initiatives, including Ekiti’s adire fabric hub, large-scale cassava production, riverine smoked fish processing, and boy-child mentoring programs. The meeting also reviewed 2026 programs, such as the National Community Food Bank launching in April across six geopolitical zones, linked to Primary Health Care centers to provide nutritional support for children aged 0-6 and pregnant women.

Child nutrition was a central focus, with Tinubu stressing aggressive action against malnutrition. Environmental initiatives were highlighted, calling on governors’ wives to establish state environment clubs and encourage youth-led tree planting and plastic waste reduction by July 15, 2026.

Tinubu also detailed upcoming initiatives, including the RHI National Scholarship Programme in September, the Elderly Support Scheme in December offering grants and medical screenings, and programs for Persons with Disabilities tied to Business Recapitalization Grants, alongside school materials distribution. She lauded the strong contributions to the National Library Fund, describing it as a generational legacy.

The meeting reinforced the Renewed Hope Initiative’s mission to empower communities, enhance nutrition, support vulnerable groups, and foster sustainable socio-economic development nationwide.
