The Federal Government and the Central Bank of Nigeria have stepped in to fast-track foreign exchange processing for the Super Eagles following concerns over delayed access to match bonuses at the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Highly placed sources in Nigerian football confirmed that all bonuses owed to the national team for the group-stage matches against Tanzania, Tunisia and Uganda were fully paid last week, before the start of the knockout rounds. However, the players are yet to see the funds reflect in their domiciliary accounts due to administrative delays linked to foreign currency conversion.

According to the sources, the delay has nothing to do with non-payment. The funds were initially released in naira and are currently undergoing conversion to foreign currency through the Central Bank of Nigeria, in line with the players’ request to be paid in foreign currency.

To resolve the situation quickly, the Minister of State for Finance, Doris Uzoka-Anite, alongside top officials of the CBN, has been working behind the scenes to accelerate the conversion process and ensure swift disbursement.

Officials familiar with the process explained that FX conversion and transfer to domiciliary accounts can take several days and, in some cases, stretch into weeks, depending on regulatory and banking procedures.

All first-round match bonuses have now cleared the necessary stages and are expected to reflect in the players’ accounts from today or, at the latest, tomorrow, the sources said.

The development is expected to calm growing concerns around player welfare as the Super Eagles continue their AFCON 2025 campaign.
