As millions of Nigerians prepare for “Crossover” services and celebrations tonight, the tradition of making New Year resolutions is in full swing. However, health experts are warning that the usual “extreme” resolutions like expensive gym memberships or restrictive fad diets often fail by mid-February.

In a year marked by economic shifts and rising living costs, the focus for 2026 is shifting toward “Low-Cost to High-Impact” wellness.

Medical professionals and nutritionists are urging Nigerians to adopt these five sustainable habits to navigate the health landscape of the coming year:

1. The Home-Cooked Revolution

With the rising cost of processed foods and the NAFDAC alert on counterfeit ingredients, the safest health move for 2026 is returning to whole, home-prepared meals. Experts suggest “portioning over restriction.” Instead of cutting out swallow or rice entirely, focus on doubling your vegetable intake, using seasonal local greens like Ugu or Shoko, which provides essential fiber to manage blood sugar and heart health.

2. Prioritize “Sleep Hygiene over screen time”

Nigeria’s digital consumption hit record highs in 2025, leading to a spike in reported insomnia and anxiety. A critical resolution for 2026 is the “Digital Sunset” turning off data and screens 30 minutes before bed. Science shows that consistent sleep (7–8 hours) is the most effective way to boost the immune system and manage the mental stress of a fast-paced economy.

3. ”Micro-Movements”

Micro-movements, such as taking the stairs, brisk walking for 20 minutes in the cool of the morning, or even intentional stretching during office breaks, have been shown to significantly reduce the risk of hypertension.

4. The 3-Litre dehydration challenge

Dehydration is a major trigger for respiratory issues and fatigue. Making a resolution to drink at least 3 litres of water daily is perhaps the cheapest medical “insurance” available. Proper hydration improves skin health, aids digestion, and helps the kidneys flush out toxins.

5. Mental “Check-Ins”

For 2026, psychologists recommend setting “emotional boundaries.” This means learning to say no to extra social or financial burdens that drain your mental reserves. Incorporating five minutes of deep breathing or “quiet time” daily can lower cortisol levels (the stress hormone) and improve overall life satisfaction.

As we step into 2026, the goal is not perfection, but consistency. Health is the only real wealth.
