Victory for Commuters: Abuja-Keffi Road Rehabilitation Secured After Lawyer’s Legal Threat

By Achimi Muktar

After years of neglect and countless commuter complaints, the Federal Ministry of Works has finally awarded the rehabilitation contract for the dilapidated Abuja-Keffi Expressway. The move comes in response to mounting pressure from human rights lawyer Vincent Adodo, who threatened legal action against the ministry over the road’s hazardous condition.

The Ministry announced that Messrs China Harbour Engineering Co. Nigeria Limited would handle the much-anticipated rehabilitation project. This decision was formally communicated to Adodo in a letter dated December 12, 2024, signed by the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency’s (FERMA) Secretary/Director of Legal Services, Richard Clark, Esq.

The Lawyer Who Took a Stand

Adodo’s relentless advocacy began in September 2022 when he sent an urgent letter to FERMA, demanding repairs to the failed sections of the expressway, particularly the Abacha Road-Nyanya Checkpoint axis. Citing the untold suffering and danger faced by commuters, he labeled the road a "death trap" and insisted on immediate action.

In October 2024, frustrated by the lack of progress, Adodo escalated his demands, issuing a seven-day ultimatum to FERMA. In his letter, he warned:

“Kindly take note that in the event of the failure and/or negligence of your agency to heed my demand... I will not hesitate to institute legal action against your agency for its dare negligence in the performance of its statutory obligation.”

The ultimatum was a turning point. Shortly after, FERMA acknowledged the urgency of the situation and began preparations to address the road’s condition.

A Troubled Road

The Abuja-Keffi Expressway connects Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory to Nasarawa State and serves as a crucial transportation link for thousands of commuters daily. Yet, for years, the road's dilapidated sections caused traffic bottlenecks, accidents, and immense frustration for road users.

Adodo’s intervention brought national attention to the issue, putting pressure on authorities to act. His determination was amplified by reports from Trafficng, which highlighted the worsening conditions and the government’s inaction.

FERMA’s Response

FERMA’s letter to Adodo confirmed that the rehabilitation project had been awarded, effectively addressing his demands. The legal threat served as a catalyst for change, proving the power of advocacy in holding public institutions accountable.

A New Chapter for Commuters

With the contract now awarded, hope is rekindled for the thousands who endure daily hardship on the Abuja-Keffi Expressway. For many, Adodo’s action represents the voice of ordinary Nigerians demanding better infrastructure and governance.

The road’s rehabilitation marks a significant milestone, transforming what was once a symbol of neglect into a testament to the impact of persistent advocacy. Commuters eagerly await the project’s completion, envisioning a smoother, safer journey ahead.

This development serves as a reminder that change often begins with individuals willing to take a stand, even against the odds. Vincent Adodo has not only championed the cause of Abuja-Keffi road users but also set a precedent for civic action in Nigeria
