Two Kwara Universities Expels 175 Students For Possessing Firearms, Fake Results

The management of the Kwara State University (KWASU) has confirmed the expulsion of 175 students of the institution over fake results and other grievous offences. 

According to a statement issued by the Acting Director of University Relations, Dr. Saeedat Aliyu, the approval of the expulsion followed the recommendations of a body, the Students' Disciplinary Committee (SDC).

SDC held sittings on the cases between October 2021 and March 2024 before finally making recommendations, with the institution announcing its decision on Monday July 8, 2024.

Examination malpractice, theft, presentation of fake results to gain admission, fraud, assault, possession of firearms and belonging to secret associations were the offences committed by the expelled students.

Related incidence saw the management of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), also in Kwara State, expel 19 students after being found guilty of theft, examination malpractices and other acts violating the school code of conduct in April.

Similar occurrence in KWASU made UNILORIN Director of Corporate Affairs, Kunle Akogun, on Monday, grant a press release stating that at least six final-year students of the institution were among the rusticated students. 

The press statement added that expulsion was approved by the Vice Chancellor, Prof Wahab Egbewole, SAN, and was recommended by the institution's Students' Disciplinary Committee at its 220th/221st meeting.

According to the statement, the affected UNILORIN students were penalised for offences ranging from misconduct, theft, examination malpractice, hostel bed-space racketeering and extortion, beating a fellow student, admission racketeering, extortion and assault.

The press statement revealed that penalties for the offences committed by the students included rustication for either one semester or one academic session, including expulsion.

The affected students were in various academic levels ranging from 100, 200, 300 and 400 Levels.
