Troops Repel Boko Haram Ambush in Borno, Kill 13 Terrorists

Troops of Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) have killed 13 Boko Haram terrorists during a failed ambush and improvised explosive device (IED) attack at Kareto, Mobbar Local Government Area of Borno State.

Military sources confirmed that the incident occurred on September 3, when troops escorting humanitarian trucks along the Gubio–Damasak road came under attack. The insurgents detonated two IEDs and opened fire, but the soldiers swiftly countered with superior firepower, overwhelming the terrorists.

Thirteen fighters were neutralised, while several others fled with injuries. Troops recovered eight AK-47 rifles, 10 magazines, large quantities of 7.62mm ammunition, detonating cords, and primed IEDs. A soldier sustained minor injuries, and two escort vehicles were damaged during the exchange.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Army on Thursday laid to rest the late Colonel Bello Umaru, Acting Commander of the 7 Division Military Intelligence Brigade, who passed away in his sleep on September 2 at Maimalari Cantonment, Maiduguri.

The burial, conducted with full military honours, was attended by senior officers, including the Theatre Commander OPHK, Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, alongside representatives of Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum.

Abubakar described the deceased as “a patriotic and gallant soldier who embodied the finest values of discipline, integrity, and service.”

Commissioned in 2002, Colonel Umaru served in various operations across Nigeria and was widely respected as a highly skilled intelligence officer.
