Tragedy in Jigawa: Death Toll Rises to Nine in Farmers-Herders Clash

A devastating clash between farmers and herders in Gululu, Miga Local Government Area of Jigawa State, has left nine people dead, according to police reports. The violent confrontation, which began over an alleged theft, quickly escalated, spreading to neighboring Jahun Local Government Area and resulting in widespread violence and destruction.

How the Crisis Unfolded

The conflict was reportedly sparked when local farmers accused herders of stealing from a provision store. Residents of Gululu traced footprints from the scene of the theft to a nearby herders’ settlement.

The village head, Muhammad Sarkin-Dori, recounted how tensions boiled over, leading to a violent confrontation. Lawan Adam, the state police spokesperson, confirmed that the initial clash spiraled into attacks and retaliations, with homes set ablaze across multiple communities in Miga and Jahun LGAs.

Nine Lives Lost Amid Chaos

Police efforts to restore peace uncovered the grim aftermath of the violence.

“Upon receipt of the report, a team of police officers from the Miga and Jahun Divisions rushed to the scene to assess the situation and restore peace and order,” Adam said.

“Unfortunately, nine bodies were recovered. The corpses were ferried to Jahun and Miga Hospitals, where the medical doctor on duty confirmed their deaths.”

One of the deceased, Dauda Kafinta, was initially declared missing but was later found dead.

Efforts to Contain the Violence

To prevent further escalation, Jigawa’s Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Abdullah, deployed additional officers to the affected areas.

A high-level stakeholder meeting was convened to address the crisis. Key participants included Jigawa State Speaker Haruna Aliyu, local government chairmen, district heads, representatives of the herders’ association Miyetti Allah, and vigilante leaders.

“The meeting was centered on maintaining law and order, avoiding violence, propaganda, and reprisal attacks,” Adam said.

Patrols have been intensified in the area, and police are investigating to identify and prosecute those responsible. While the situation has been brought under control, the tragedy has left the community shaken, with survivors calling for peace and justice.
