President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to enhancing the welfare of Nigerian troops, pledging significant investments in their safety and living conditions. Speaking on Thursday during the inauguration of the newly built Bola Tinubu Barracks in Abuja, the President celebrated the military as the backbone of national security and vowed to prioritize their needs.
A Promise to the Heroes
Addressing the gathering, President Tinubu assured the troops that their welfare would never be compromised.
“Your welfare cannot and will not be compromised,” the President declared. “We will continue to commit resources to improve your welfare and ensure you have what you need to fulfill your mandate. You are our heroes.”
He also emphasized the importance of maintaining the facilities, urging the troops to adopt a robust culture of care for their living and operational environments.
Tackling Housing Deficits
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, revealed the extent of the accommodation challenges facing the Nigerian Army, with more than 40% of personnel still without adequate housing.
The newly inaugurated barracks aim to address this gap, providing 614 residential units designed for 170 officers and 444 soldiers, along with their families. The complex features a mix of modern accommodations, worship centers, sports facilities, a powerhouse, and essential infrastructure, including a perimeter fence, road networks, and water supply systems.
A Fraction of the Need
Despite the progress, Gen. Oluyede described the project as only a small step toward addressing the housing deficit within the Army, particularly in Abuja.
“The accommodation gap remains significant, but this project underscores our commitment to improving the lives of our personnel,” he stated.
A Broader Commitment
The unveiling of the barracks is part of President Tinubu’s broader strategy to support the Armed Forces, ensuring they remain equipped to tackle internal security challenges. By committing resources to their welfare and operational readiness, the President aims to fortify national security while addressing the fundamental needs of military personnel.
For the troops and their families now moving into the Bola Tinubu Barracks, the project represents more than housing—it’s a promise that their sacrifices will not go unnoticed or unrewarded.
