President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has taken a strong stance against civil servants who relocated abroad without formal resignation, yet continued to draw salaries. He has ordered the affected employees to refund the wages they received during their absence.
Speaking at the 2024 Civil Service Award and Gala Night, Tinubu emphasized the need for accountability and restitution. "The culprits must refund the money they fraudulently collected. Their supervisors and department heads must also be punished for aiding and abetting the fraud under their watch," he said.
The President's directive comes after the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation revealed that measures had been taken to address the issue. Tinubu stressed that the Civil Service must not be a place where misconduct is tolerated, but rather the bedrock of government that delivers public goods to citizens.
