Southern Kaduna is set to witness a transformative shift as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has given the green light for the establishment of a federal university in the region. The announcement was made by Vice President Kashim Shettima during a condolence visit to the family of the late Yohanna Kukah, Agwom Akulu of Ikulu Chiefdom, over the weekend.
A University for Southern Kaduna
According to Shettima, the decision to approve the university reflects President Tinubu’s commitment to addressing the educational and developmental needs of Southern Kaduna. “With Senator Katung and the member of the House of Representatives, we have reached out to President Tinubu, and he has consented to the establishment of a federal university in Southern Kaduna,” he said during his visit to Ikulu Kingdom in Zangon Kataf Local Government Area.
The Vice President also revealed ongoing plans to establish a Federal Medical Centre in Kafanchan, further emphasizing the administration’s focus on healthcare infrastructure for the region.
Security and Inclusion in Focus
Shettima highlighted the President's dedication to the security of the region, pointing to the appointment of General Christopher Musa as the Chief of Defence Staff as evidence of deliberate steps to address Southern Kaduna’s unique challenges.
“Rest assured that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has the people of Kaduna and the people of Southern Kaduna at heart,” Shettima assured the gathering.
He commended Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, for his inclusive governance approach, noting that "government is about linking all parts to have a sense of belonging."
Roads and Infrastructure Development
In addition to education and security, road infrastructure was a key topic during the visit. The Vice President pledged collaboration between the Federal and State Governments to ensure Southern Kaduna benefits from improved roads, addressing the challenges faced by residents due to deteriorating infrastructure.
A Tribute from the Kukah Family
Renowned Bishop Matthew Kukah of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto expressed gratitude on behalf of the Kukah family for the Vice President’s visit. Reflecting on the difficulties of reaching the region, Bishop Kukah said, “It took you around three and a half hours to get here. The road is largely broken. I know you will remain a friend of this Ikulu nation and a friend of this community. We are honored to have you.”
A Promise for a Brighter Future
The establishment of a federal university and ongoing discussions about healthcare and infrastructure signal a new chapter for Southern Kaduna. As residents await tangible changes, the commitments made by the Tinubu administration offer hope for sustained development and inclusion in national progress.
