Tinubu Appoints New Vice Chancellors for Education Universities in Zaria, Kano

President Bola Tinubu has approved new leadership for two recently upgraded education universities in Northern Nigeria, naming seasoned academics and professionals to steer their affairs.

In a statement released Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu appointed Prof. Yahaya Bunkure as Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Education, Zaria, Kaduna State.

Bunkure, a renowned scholar in science education, is currently the Vice Chancellor of Sa’adatu Rimi University of Education, Kano, and brings extensive academic and administrative experience to his new role.

Leadership for Kano

The President also announced the appointment of Engr. Abdurrazaq Nakore as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education, Kano.

Nakore, a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, previously served as Executive Secretary of the Rural Electricity Board in Jigawa State.

Alongside him, Prof. Abdullahi Kodage was named Vice Chancellor of the Kano-based university.

Strengthening Education Institutions

Both universities — Zaria and Kano — were among four Colleges of Education upgraded to full-fledged universities between 2022 and 2023, part of a wider effort to expand teacher education and strengthen Nigeria’s tertiary sector.

According to the statement, under existing laws, pro-chancellors will serve a four-year term, while vice chancellors will serve for five years.
