Tax Reform Showdown: NLC Calls National Dialogue to Halt Controversial Bills
By Achimi muktar
In a bold move to reshape the nation’s fiscal landscape, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced plans for a National Dialogue this January in Ibadan, Oyo State. The focal point? The controversial national tax reform bills currently before the National Assembly, which have sparked widespread debate.
A Call for Inclusive Governance
In its New Year message, NLC President Joe Ajaero emphasized the need for policies that reflect the collective will of the people, advocating for governance driven by transparency, inclusivity, and citizen engagement.
“It is on this premise that we once again call on the federal government to withdraw its present tax bills,” Ajaero stated. He urged a collaborative approach to drafting a new tax law that aligns with the country’s development goals while earning the trust and acceptance of Nigerians.
Why the Dialogue Matters
The NLC underscored the importance of social dialogue, asserting that meaningful stakeholder participation is critical to fostering stability and sustainability in governance. By involving citizens, unions, and other key players, the labour movement believes the government can create policies that benefit the majority rather than a select few.
As the Ibadan dialogue approaches, the NLC is set to rally stakeholders to co-create a tax framework that balances revenue generation with the economic realities faced by ordinary Nigerians.
Welfare at the Core
The NLC’s message went beyond tax reforms, spotlighting broader issues of governance. It called on the government to prioritize citizens’ welfare, citing access to quality healthcare, education, housing, and transportation as key indicators of good governance.
“The welfare of the citizens remains the primary justification for the existence of any government,” the NLC declared. It urged authorities to ensure that policies translate into tangible benefits for the populace.
Industrial Peace and Worker Welfare
Ajaero also highlighted the importance of industrial harmony, warning against the use of strong-arm tactics in dealing with workers and unions. He called for adherence to the 2024 National Minimum Wage Act and a timely review of wages to reflect the economic challenges posed by recent policies.
“The increasing use of violence in engagements with workers must cease. It is a recipe for industrial disharmony,” he warned.
Ngige’s Plea for Unity
Meanwhile, former Labour Minister Senator Chris Ngige issued a separate New Year message, urging Nigerians to focus on unity and collective progress. “Let us do away with all forms of negative mindset and think in the direction of a brighter future for our dear country,” Ngige said, calling for understanding and support for efforts to revive the economy.
Ngige also touched on the upcoming off-cycle governorship election in Anambra State, urging the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and political actors to uphold transparency and fairness.
What Lies Ahead
As 2025 begins, the NLC’s push for a national tax dialogue represents a critical moment for Nigeria’s fiscal and social future. With workers’ welfare and inclusivity at the heart of its agenda, the labour movement is set to challenge the government to rethink its approach and prioritize the needs of its citizens.
The Ibadan dialogue promises to be a turning point, bringing together diverse voices to chart a course for a more equitable and prosperous Nigeria. Will the federal government heed the call? All eyes are on the outcome of this pivotal gathering.
