Tambuwal Regains Freedom, Vows to Cooperate Fully with EFCC Probe

Former Sokoto State governor and current senator, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has pledged his readiness to work with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) as investigations continue into allegations of financial misconduct during his tenure.

Tambuwal, who represents Sokoto South Senatorial District, was released late Monday after honouring an EFCC invitation at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja. Sources said he arrived at the commission around 11:30 a.m. and spent several hours responding to investigators’ questions before being allowed to go home.

Inquiries, according to EFCC insiders, centre on cash withdrawals reportedly running into billions of naira, allegedly made in breach of provisions of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022. The transactions under scrutiny are said to span several years of his governorship between 2015 and 2023.

Tambuwal’s appearance sparked conversations on social media, with supporters hailing his release as a sign of political resilience, while critics pressed for transparency in the ongoing probe.

Political commentators have noted that his release is not the conclusion of the investigation, as further questioning and document reviews are expected in the coming weeks.

The case has reignited debate over Nigeria’s anti-graft efforts, with some analysts calling for more even-handed prosecutions that cut across political lines. Tambuwal, meanwhile, has maintained that he will provide all necessary cooperation to clear his name.
