Tambuwal Alleges Tinubu Plot to Weaken Opposition
Abuja — Senator Aminu Tambuwal has accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of orchestrating moves to destabilise opposition parties across Nigeria, warning that democracy is being undermined under the current government.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday, the former Sokoto governor and key figure in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition said recent political tensions and police summons to opposition leaders were part of a broader campaign to weaken dissent.
While reacting to the police invitation of former Kaduna governor Nasir El-Rufai and other ADC chieftains, Tambuwal said he had no issue honouring police calls but questioned the underlying motives.
“If I’m invited by the police, I will appear. But the interpretation and reading of meaning into the invitation is a different ball game altogether,” Tambuwal noted.
“We are all sensible, and when you look at what is happening in various political parties in Nigeria today, you don’t need to be told the amount of denial that they — including Tinubu — are involved in destabilising efforts of opposition parties.”
‘Not Disappointed, I Campaigned Against Him’
Tambuwal, who served as Speaker of the House of Representatives and later as governor for two terms, expressed shock at how the country is being run, but added he was not surprised given his stance during the 2023 elections.
“I’m shocked that under Tinubu’s watch, Nigeria is being run the way it’s run today. And I can’t say I’m disappointed — because I campaigned against him,” he said.
His comments add to growing criticism from opposition figures who accuse the Tinubu government of shrinking civic space, silencing critics, and manipulating security agencies against rival parties.
