Reno Omokri Slams Peter Obi Over Death Threat Claims, APC Fires Back

By Achimi Muktar

Lagos, Nigeria – A fierce political storm is brewing as former presidential aide Reno Omokri, the All Progressives Congress (APC), and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar clash over allegations of death threats made by former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi.

The drama began when Obi took to his social media platform, claiming that his New Year message had provoked threats against his life, his family, and associates. He specifically accused APC spokesman Felix Morka of warning him that he had “crossed the line.”

Obi’s Alarming Claims

In a post shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Obi expressed grave concerns:

“Have I really crossed the line? My New Year message has now led to threats against my life, my family, and those around me. Felix Morka has warned that I will face the consequences.”

He went further to accuse President Bola Tinubu’s administration of suppressing opposition voices and creating a repressive political climate.

Omokri Hits Back: “Obidients Are the Real Threats”

Reno Omokri, a vocal critic of Obi, wasted no time responding. In a scathing statement, he accused Obi of hypocrisy, highlighting the alleged harassment and threats carried out by Obi’s supporters, known as “Obidients.”

“When your Obidients threatened my one-year-old daughter, tracked me to my jogging route, and released my U.S. address, what did you do, Peter Obi? Absolutely nothing. Now you’re playing the victim?”

Omokri listed several public figures, including Nobel laureate Professor Wole Soyinka, who he claimed had been harassed by Obidients.

“You trained and unleashed this vicious mob on Nigeria, and now you’re complaining about threats? Look in the mirror if you’re seeking authoritarianism,” Omokri added.

APC Denies Threat Allegations

The APC, in a strongly worded statement, dismissed Obi’s claims as “malicious lies” and accused him of inciting his supporters against Felix Morka.

“Morka never threatened Obi or anyone else. Obi’s baseless claims are nothing more than emotional blackmail and attention-seeking,” the party declared.

The APC further accused Obi of tolerating the unruly behavior of his supporters, stating:

“Obi leads a restless online mob that bullies and issues death threats to critics, yet he has never condemned their actions.”

Atiku Supports Obi, Calls Out APC

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar sided with Obi, describing the APC’s alleged threat as indicative of a troubling trend under Tinubu’s administration.

“The comment that Obi has ‘crossed the line’ is inflammatory and underscores an authoritarian governance model stifling opposition voices,” Atiku said in a statement.

He also called on the APC to clarify Morka’s comments and issue a formal apology, warning that the erosion of democratic freedoms is a dangerous precedent.

The Bigger Picture

This clash has spotlighted the growing tension between Nigeria’s ruling party and the opposition. While the APC has accused Obi of spreading falsehoods, Obi’s supporters view his claims as a fight for democratic principles.

As the political discourse heats up, many Nigerians are left questioning whether freedom of speech and civil engagement can survive the rising tide of hostility in the country’s political landscape.
