PDP Weighs Automatic 2027 Presidential Ticket for Jonathan Amid High-Level Talks

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is considering offering former President Goodluck Jonathan an automatic presidential ticket for the 2027 elections—if he agrees to return to full-scale partisan politics and take up a more active leadership role within the party.

PDP stalwart Woyengikuro described Jonathan as the party’s most formidable choice at this political moment, stressing his national stature and influence.

“Is he not the best candidate for us right now?” he asked. “He’s not just a former president; he’s the leader of this party today. Apart from former President Olusegun Obasanjo, the next person in line is Goodluck Jonathan.”

According to Woyengikuro, behind-the-scenes consultations are already underway between the PDP hierarchy and Jonathan’s close associates to persuade him back into the frontlines of party leadership as preparations for 2027 gather momentum.

He argued that Nigeria is at a critical juncture where experienced leadership is needed, particularly from the South, and that Jonathan fits that profile.

When asked if the PDP could offer Jonathan a guaranteed ticket, Woyengikuro was unequivocal. “For me, yes. Quote me anywhere—I want him to come. An automatic ticket, as it stands now, is the way forward. We must salvage both this party and the nation.”

The PDP chieftain also praised Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, calling him “vibrant” and capable of bridging the generational divide in Nigerian politics.

“These are the two figures I stand for—Goodluck Jonathan and Seyi Makinde,” he concluded.

As political alignments begin to take shape ahead of 2027, the PDP is expected to intensify internal negotiations and strategic positioning in the coming months.
