Ondo LG Polls: APC Dominates with Wins in 16 LGAs, Results in 2 Councils Awaited
By Achimi Muktar
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has secured a resounding victory in Saturday’s local government elections in Ondo State, winning chairmanship and councillorship positions in 16 of the state’s 18 local government areas.
Joseph Aremo, chairman of the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC) and chief returning officer, announced the results on Sunday. However, he noted that elections in Owo and Ondo West LGAs were rescheduled due to a printing error involving the wrong logo of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) on ballot papers.
According to Aremo, the rescheduled elections for the two councils took place on Sunday, and the results are expected to be announced by 7:00 p.m.
Twelve political parties participated in the elections, including Action Alliance (AA), Labour Party (LP), Action Peoples Party (APP), and the Social Democratic Party (SDP). However, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) pulled out of the elections 48 hours before the exercise.
The PDP cited a lack of confidence in ODIEC’s ability to conduct a free, fair, and credible election. In a statement issued by its spokesperson, Leye Igbagbo, the party expressed concerns about the transparency of the electoral process.
Despite the PDP’s withdrawal, the APC maintained a dominant performance across the participating councils, leaving other parties trailing in the results declared so far.
The final results for the rescheduled elections in Owo and Ondo West LGAs are eagerly awaited, as they will complete the tally of the local government polls that have reaffirmed the APC’s stronghold in Ondo State.
Observers and stakeholders are closely watching to see if the outcome of the rescheduled polls will mirror the sweeping victories the APC has already claimed in the majority of the state.
