Omokri Slams Obi: 'No Moral Right to Criticize Tinubu’s Economic Policies'

By Achimi Muktar

Former presidential aide Reno Omokri has launched a scathing critique of Labour Party’s former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, accusing him of lacking the moral authority to criticize President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies.

Obi’s Critique of Tinubu

Peter Obi recently described President Tinubu’s economic policies as inadequate, claiming they had worsened poverty levels across Nigeria. Obi urged the President to tour the states to witness firsthand the nation’s poverty challenges.

However, Omokri dismissed Obi’s criticism, calling it hypocritical and baseless.

Omokri Fires Back

In a strongly worded statement on Friday, Omokri argued that Obi’s tenure as Anambra State governor worsened poverty in the state.

“Peter Obi, who worsened poverty in Anambra State, has no moral authority to accuse President Tinubu, who is reducing it,” Omokri said.

Citing statistics, Omokri stated that poverty levels in Anambra rose from 41.4% to 53.7% under Obi’s leadership. He accused Obi of prioritizing personal financial interests over public welfare, claiming the former governor deposited state funds in his bank accounts to accrue interest rather than investing in infrastructure or education.

“Instead of building schools or improving education, Obi built breweries that benefited his family’s business interests,” Omokri alleged.

Tinubu’s Economic Gains

Omokri praised President Tinubu’s economic reforms, highlighting several achievements:

Autonomy for local governments, enabling grassroots poverty alleviation.

Revitalization of Nigeria’s refining sector, with three major refineries now operational, transforming the country into a net exporter of petroleum products.

A 28% increase in foreign direct investment (FDI), attributed to the President’s strategic foreign trips to attract investors.

“This is the first Yuletide season where Nigerians enjoyed both fuel availability and price reductions,” Omokri said, emphasizing the reforms' tangible impact.

A Political Agenda?

Omokri accused Obi of being politically motivated in his critiques, claiming his focus was more on gaining power than solving Nigeria’s challenges.

“When asked about a potential merger between his Labour Party, PDP, and NNPP, Obi said their goal was to ‘defeat the APC,’” Omokri noted. “Not to reduce poverty, end insecurity, or improve education—just to gain power.”

Omokri argued that this desperation for power was why NNPP leader Rabiu Kwankwaso rejected the merger, labeling it self-serving.

The Bigger Picture

Omokri concluded by stating that President Tinubu’s administration has delivered meaningful progress in tackling Nigeria’s longstanding economic challenges. He urged Nigerians to focus on the results rather than divisive political rhetoric.

“Obi is fixated on President Tinubu because he wants the power Tinubu wields so effectively. Obi is the problem. President Tinubu is the solution,” Omokri declared.
