Olorunnimbe Vows to Deepen Broadband, Protect Consumers as NCC Chairman

Abuja, Nigeria – Idris Olorunnimbe, the newly appointed Chairman of the National Communications Commission (NCC), has outlined an ambitious agenda focused on improving service quality and expanding universal coverage for all Nigerians, following his successful screening by the Senate.

In a statement released on his social media platform, Mr. Olorunnimbe expressed his gratitude after being screened yesterday by the Senate Committee on Communications, chaired by Distinguished Senator Ikra Bilbis.

“I thank the Almighty Allah for guidance and grace,” Olorunnimbe stated. “I am grateful to the Senators and House of Representative members for a rigorous session and to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the trust and responsibility.”

He revealed that the Senate Committee made its expectations for the commission explicitly clear. “Nigerians deserve quality service and universal coverage. We understand the assignment and, upon confirmation and resumption, we are committed to delivering to the best of our collective abilities,” he affirmed.

Olorunnimbe laid out a five-point focus for his upcoming tenure, signalling a strategic direction for the nation's telecom regulator. “Our focus is clear. Deepen broadband. Expand inclusion. Protect consumers. Strengthen competition. Improve quality of service,” he declared.

He also extended heartfelt appreciation to those who supported him, specifically naming Distinguished Senator Tokunbo Abiru for his “kind attestations” to his character and competence. He also thanked his family, friends, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and the Honourable Minister of State for Finance, Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite, for their presence and solidarity.

Looking ahead, the incoming Chairman emphasised a collaborative approach, stating he looks forward to working with the Executive Vice Chairman, Dr. Aminu Maida, fellow Board members, and the management of the NCC. The shared goal, he said, is to “crowd in investment that powers jobs and growth, in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda.”

The announcement has been met with anticipation from industry stakeholders who are eager to see how the new leadership will address longstanding challenges in the Nigerian telecommunications sector, including issues of service quality, broadband penetration, and consumer rights.
