Adejuwon Soyinka, a Nigerian journalist and West African Regional Editor of the Conversation Africa, has been released on bail after being detained for over six hours by the State Security Service (SSS) on Sunday.

Soyinka was arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos upon his arrival from the UK and taken to the SSS headquarters in Ikoyi, where he was held until 12:30 pm. His release was facilitated by the intervention of the International Press Institute (IPI) Nigeria.

As part of his bail conditions, the SSS seized his passport and requested his Nigerian address and phone number. Soyinka confirmed his release in a text message to PREMIUM TIMES, stating that he would speak further on his experience once he got home.

The reason for his arrest remains unclear, but the SSS claimed it was based on a request from another government agency.
