Nigerian Civil Servants to Receive Enhanced Salaries After Minimum Wage Adjustments

Razaq Ivori

The Federal Government has commenced payment of the new minimum wage and consequential adjustments to public servants across all levels of the federal civil service. This development follows the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024, which increased the minimum wage rate from ₦30,000 to ₦70,000 ¹.

New Salary Structure

Documents from the National Income, Salaries and Wages Commission revealed the updated salaries for civil servants under the Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure. While specific figures for each cadre are not publicly available, the amendment act's provisions aim to ensure fair labor practices amidst Nigeria's economic challenges ¹.

Key Implications

The new minimum wage rate took effect on May 1, 2024, with employers required to pay the difference in salaries between May and July 2024 ¹. Employers exempt from complying with the amendment act include those with fewer than 25 employees, seasonal workers, and establishments paying workers on a part-time or commission basis ¹.

Consequential Adjustments

The Federal Government and organized labor reached an agreement on consequential adjustments in wages for officers on grade levels 07-17 ². This agreement ensures that civil servants receive fair compensation reflecting the new minimum wage.

Implementation and Compliance

The government has directed the Budget Office of the Federation to commence the new payment. Employers are encouraged to review their wage structures, implement the wage increase, and maintain records to ensure compliance ¹. Non-compliance may result in penalties and fines.
