Nigeria Joins BRICS Countries to Counter US Trade Threats

Nigeria has joined senior diplomats from BRICS countries, including Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, for a two-day meeting in Brazil. The meeting aims to present a united front against threats emerging from US President Donald Trump's aggressive trade policies.

The diplomats will discuss a declaration reaffirming the importance of the multilateral trading system. The meeting comes after the International Monetary Fund slashed global growth forecasts due to Trump's sweeping new tariffs. The BRICS countries, representing nearly half of the global population and 39% of global GDP, have expanded to include new members such as Iran, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates.

The meeting will also touch on climate change ahead of the UN COP30 climate summit in November and the war in Ukraine, as Trump seeks to push Russia and Ukraine toward a peace agreement. Nigeria will participate in discussions with nine other "partner" countries on Tuesday.
