NiMet Warns of Dust Haze Threats to Flights and Drivers"
By Achimi Muktar
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has sounded an alarm for travelers and residents as hazy weather conditions are set to sweep across the country from Wednesday to Friday, posing risks to flights and road travel.
In its latest weather outlook, released on Tuesday in Abuja, NiMet predicted moderate dust haze across many regions, with horizontal visibility reduced to two to five kilometers. Some areas may even experience localised visibility of less than one kilometer, creating significant challenges for pilots and drivers alike.
What to Expect by Region
Northern Nigeria:
The region will grapple with slight dust haze and improved visibility for most of the forecast period. However, on Friday, moderate dust haze will return, reducing visibility to two to five kilometers. Parts of Zamfara, Katsina, Kano, Kebbi, Sokoto, and Kaduna are particularly at risk, with localized visibility dropping below one kilometer.
North-Central Nigeria:
Moderate dust haze with similar visibility challenges is expected throughout the period, requiring heightened caution for air and road users.
Southern Nigeria:
Inland cities will face hazy conditions with scattered cloud patches, while coastal areas will start the day with mist or fog, transitioning to hazy skies as the day progresses.
Health and Travel Precautions
NiMet has urged the public to take the forecast seriously, emphasizing the health risks posed by dust particles suspended in the air. The agency specifically warned individuals with respiratory issues, such as asthma, to remain vigilant and minimize exposure.
For airline operators, NiMet strongly recommended obtaining airport-specific weather reports to facilitate safe and effective flight planning. Drivers navigating affected areas should also exercise caution, as the reduced visibility could lead to accidents.
Stay Updated
To keep Nigerians informed, NiMet encouraged residents to stay connected to their website at www.nimet.gov.ng for the latest weather updates.
As the hazy conditions loom, this is a call to action for all Nigerians to prioritize safety—whether in the air or on the road.
