In an outpouring of grief and tributes, President Bola Tinubu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Northern Governors, and other prominent Nigerians have joined forces to mourn the passing of former FCT Minister, Lieutenant-General Jeremiah Timbut Useni (Rtd). The revered elder statesman, who served his country with distinction, passed away at the age of 81, leaving behind a legacy of service, patriotism, and leadership.

President Tinubu, through his Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, expressed heartfelt condolences to Useni’s family, friends, and associates. Remembering the late General's dedication, Tinubu noted, “His courage and selfless service inspired countless young officers to prioritize the nation above all.” Tinubu also acknowledged Useni’s contributions in politics, particularly as deputy national chairman of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and a Senator for Plateau South.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar described Useni as a “monumental loss” to the nation, calling him a “fine soldier, public administrator, and peace advocate.” Atiku fondly recalled Useni’s jovial nature, earning him the nickname “Merry Jerryman” among friends and colleagues. “His deeds in nation-building are too visible to be forgotten,” Atiku stated, highlighting Useni’s role as a conflict mediator and his legacy of patriotism.

The Northern Governors’ Forum, represented by its chairman, Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State, lauded Useni’s impact on the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and his unwavering commitment to national unity. Governor Yahaya emphasized, “His wealth of experience and contributions to governance will remain indelible in our nation’s history.”

Former Senate President David Mark echoed similar sentiments, describing Useni as a “hero” and a “pragmatic leader” whose life epitomized selfless service. Mark highlighted Useni’s instrumental role in laying the groundwork for the FCT's development, which continues to benefit millions.

Current FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, likened Useni’s death to the “fall of a great tree.” Wike praised Useni’s dedication, recounting his journey from joining the Army at 14 to serving as a Military Governor, Minister of Transport, and Senator. “The Tarok people of Plateau State and Nigerians at large will never forget his virtues,” Wike added.

The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) paid tribute to their former Board of Trustees Chairman, calling Useni “one of the architects of modern Nigeria.” ACF spokesperson Tukur Muhammad-Baba described Useni as a “quintessential soldier, nationalist, and elder statesman,” commending his progressive leadership and unwavering dedication to the nation.

Lt. Gen. Jeremiah Useni’s illustrious career spanned decades, during which he served as Governor of old Bendel State, Quarter-Master General of the Nigerian Army, and Minister of Transport and FCT. Known for his affable nature and commitment to unity, Useni’s legacy continues to inspire leaders across generations.
