*NSC’s Forward-Looking Leadership of Sports Industry Attracting Captains of Industry into Sports*

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has ushered in a new era in Nigerian sports administration, following one of the most transparent, peaceful, and inclusive sports federation elections in recent history. 

Under the visionary leadership of NSC Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade, the elections marked a significant turning point, reimagining the governance of sports in Nigeria and this model is attracting some of the nation’s most accomplished professionals to into sports federations.

The elections, which were free, fair, and transparent, provided equal opportunities for all qualified stakeholders to contest and contribute to the renewed vision of the sports sector. The outcome reflects growing confidence in the NSC’s reforms and its commitment to merit, integrity, and national growth through sports.

Among the newly elected leaders are notable captains of industry, public servants, and professionals of national standing who bring decades of leadership, innovation, and excellence to the nation’s sports federations.

Leading this distinguished lineup is the Honourable Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, who emerged as the President of the Nigerian Boxing Federation. A long-standing advocate for youth empowerment through sports, Edun having served as Chairman of the Lagos Boxing Hall of Fame and has returned to the sport to deepen its development under the NSC’s revitalized vision.

Also bringing his weight of experience to national sports is the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, who was elected President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation. His emergence represents a continued commitment to discipline, structure, and excellence, qualities that have defined his leadership in public service.

In another notable development, two-time Governor of Gombe State and sitting Senator, Alhaji Ibrahim Dankwambo, was elected President of the Nigeria Chess Federation. With a career distinguished by financial prudence, governance reform, and public service, Senator Dankwambo is set to bring strategic leadership and organizational acumen to the intellectual sport.

Similarly, Senator Obinna Ogba emerged as the President of the Traditional Sports Federation of Nigeria, where his vast experience in sports administration and governance will contribute to the growth and preservation of Nigeria’s indigenous sports heritage.

The election also produced Rt. Honourable Victor Ochei, former Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, as the President of the Nigeria Tennis Federation, reflecting the NSC’s inclusive approach that is encouraging diverse leadership participation across all sports.

In the cricket community, Mr. Uyi Akpata was re-elected unopposed as the President of the Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF) for a second term. A senior regional partner at PwC and a respected figure in both corporate and sports circles, Akpata has been instrumental in raising the standards of Nigerian cricket, advancing grassroots development, and promoting Nigeria’s sporting image global

Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade also praised the process, describing it as a “new benchmark for transparency and inclusiveness.”

“Our focus has been to restore confidence in the system. These elections are a testament to our resolve to reposition Nigerian sports as a beacon of integrity and innovation,” he said.

With this new wave of credible leadership, the NSC reaffirmed its commitment to nurturing excellence, strengthening governance across federations, and ensuring that Nigerian sports thrive both locally and on the global stage.
