In a bold move to reshape the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the Federal Government has invested over ₦89.2 billion in infrastructure and education within the last year, focusing on Bwari and its surrounding areas.
Massive Investments in Roads
FCT Minister Nyesom Wike disclosed that major road projects have been completed, including:
₦7 billion for the construction of the 5-kilometer Gaba–Tokulo Road.
₦27 billion for the rehabilitation of the Dutse to Bwari Road.
₦28 billion for the dualization of the Ushafa to War College Road.
Wike emphasized the significance of these projects, especially the Gaba–Tokulo Road, which was a direct response to the demands of local residents.
“The people of Bwari said they wanted this road, and today, we are inaugurating the completed project,” Wike said.
The minister noted that the government’s directive under President Tinubu aims to construct at least one road in each area council annually.
Education Gets a Boost
In addition to infrastructure, the Federal Government has committed ₦27 billion to rehabilitate and construct schools across Bwari. Benefiting schools include:
Government Girls Secondary School, Dutse
Government Secondary School, Bwari
Government Girls Secondary School, Ushafa (new school)
Government Girls Secondary School, Dei Dei
Government Girls Secondary School, Kubwa
Government Girls Secondary School, Jibi
The administration has also prioritized security, with two police divisional offices under construction and set for completion by May.
Extending Development to Rural Areas
Bwari Area Council Chairman, Mr. John Gabaya, praised the government’s efforts, noting that rural communities are witnessing unprecedented progress.
“We’ve never seen this level of transformation in our rural areas. I urge the government to extend the Gaba–Tokulo Road to Kawu and consider linking the Murtala Mohammed Expressway via Kubwa to the Nigeria Law School,” Gabaya said.
Beyond 2024: What’s Next?
The FCT Administration is looking ahead with additional projects planned for the 2025 budget, including extending the Gaba–Tokulo Road to Kawu, a border community with Kaduna State, and installing streetlights to enhance safety.
A Broader Vision for Education
The Federal Government’s education initiatives in the FCT reflect its commitment to exceeding UNESCO’s benchmark of 26% for annual education budgets. Key accomplishments include:
Renovating 21 primary and junior secondary schools.
Establishing 30 new senior secondary schools.
Retraining teachers and upgrading facilities across the six area councils.
Allocating ₦14.53 billion for the completion of FCT University in Abaji to boost tertiary education.
A Brighter Future for the FCT
This unprecedented investment signals the government’s dedication to improving infrastructure and education across the FCT. With more projects in the pipeline, rural and urban communities alike are poised for a transformative shift, bringing lasting benefits to the region’s residents.
