N388M Jackpot! FCT Minister Empowers 10 Communities with Life-Changing Funds and Tools
By Achimi muktar
In a groundbreaking initiative to bolster rural development, the Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, has disbursed ₦388 million ($250,000) to ten communities in the FCT. This landmark funding is part of the Community Revolving Fund (CRF), a critical component of the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) Project.
Transforming Communities with Financial Empowerment
The funds, distributed through CRF Management Committees, provide each community with ₦38.8 million ($25,000). This financial boost comes with zero interest rates, but Dr. Mahmoud emphasized timely repayment to sustain the initiative and ensure broader community benefits.
"I urge you to utilise these funds wisely and responsibly," the minister said, encouraging the beneficiaries to leverage this opportunity to improve their livelihoods and uplift their communities.
The initiative aligns with the Federal Government's strategic push to combat food insecurity and promote sustainable land and water management. It focuses on empowering communities with climate-smart agricultural practices and natural resource management strategies.
Beyond Funds: Tools for Growth and Resilience
In addition to the financial support, the event saw the distribution of essential tools to enhance agricultural and environmental resilience. Items included:
60 Solar-Powered Water Pumping Machines: Boosting irrigation for climate-smart farming.
30 Motorcycles: Provided to FCT Forest Guards for mobility and environmental monitoring.
Water Tanker and Multipurpose Truck: To support reforestation and irrigation efforts.
Dr. Mahmoud flagged off these distributions, reiterating the FCT Administration’s commitment to fostering equity and resilience across the territory.
A Timely Response to Nigeria’s Food Crisis
The timing of this initiative couldn’t be more critical, as Nigeria grapples with escalating food insecurity. "This project reflects the FCT Administration’s dedication to uplifting the lives of the most vulnerable groups, thereby fostering a more equitable and resilient FCT," Dr. Mahmoud said.
The initiative also aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, focusing on improving socio-economic conditions nationwide.
Pilot Communities Lead the Way
The ten pilot communities benefiting from the CRF include Dafa, Gbako, Sheda, Pukafa, Ike, Tekpese, Wako, Ashara, Gbawuji, and Rugan Bature. Each has been strategically selected for its potential to implement sustainable and adaptive agricultural practices.
Impact Beyond Funds
Mandate Secretary for Agriculture and Rural Development, Lawan Kolo Geidam, highlighted the CRF's transformative impact. Over 41 solar-powered boreholes and 270 solar-powered lights have been installed across communities. Additionally, more than 60 tube wells have been constructed, significantly boosting dry-season farming.
Geidam assured the public of the Secretariat’s commitment to ensuring the funds are used effectively. “This project has significantly enhanced the lives of our community members, promoting food security and sustainable development,” he said.
Looking Ahead
Dr. Mahmoud’s bold initiative underscores the FCT Administration’s resolve to build thriving and sustainable communities. By empowering local leaders and equipping residents with tools for growth, this project paves the way for a more vibrant and resilient Federal Capital Territory.
