Ministry of Defence Promises Housing Solutions for Ex-Servicemen

By Achimi muktar

In a bid to tackle the longstanding housing challenges faced by ex-servicemen, the Ministry of Defence has pledged sweeping reforms to improve their post-service welfare. Permanent Secretary Ibrahim Kana Aduda made the promise during a weekend familiarization visit to the Defence Headquarters in Abuja, assuring that plans are already in motion to address these pressing issues.

A Commitment to Change

Speaking to military officials, Aduda highlighted the urgent need to align defence policies with public service standards. He emphasized that improving welfare, particularly in housing, is a top priority.

“I am already having meetings in those areas, drawing from international best practices to position the armed forces for stronger welfare provisions,” Aduda stated.

He proposed establishing a military-focused mortgage financing facility akin to the Federal Mortgage Bank, where civil servants currently access loans of up to ₦50 million. Such a program, he explained, would ensure that military personnel can secure housing both during their service and after retirement.

Strategic Partnerships for Progress

The Permanent Secretary’s visit was marked by a pledge to work closely with the Army, Navy, and Air Force to expedite the review of welfare policies. This collaborative approach, Aduda believes, will lead to tangible outcomes for military personnel, providing a smoother transition to civilian life after service.

Support from the Defence Leadership

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, represented by the Chief of Defence Policy and Plans, Air Vice Marshal Sayo Olatunde, welcomed Aduda’s initiatives. Expressing gratitude for the visit, Olatunde noted the significance of the proposed welfare reforms and their potential impact on the morale of serving and retired personnel.

The tour also included visits to key facilities of the Army, Navy, and Air Force, further solidifying the ministry’s commitment to addressing challenges across the military services.

A Glimpse of the Future

The proposed reforms signal a shift in how Nigeria’s ex-servicemen are cared for post-service. By introducing innovative solutions like mortgage financing and aligning defence policies with international best practices, the Ministry of Defence is laying the groundwork for a brighter, more secure future for the nation’s retired heroes.
