Minimum Wage: NLC, TUC, Organized Labour Convenes Today

Following the recent strike actions for an upward review of the national minimum wage in Nigeria, the organised labour meets today, Wednesday 26th of June, 2024.

The joint organised labour meeting converges representatives of Trade Union Congress (TUC), National Labour Congress (NLC) and other affiliate professional bodies.

A senior official at the NLC headquarters confirmed to Premium Times it will take place at Labour House, Abuja at 10 AM on Wednesday.

He further disclosed the agenda centres on discussing the next step to take following FEC’s decision to defer discussion on the report of the Tripartite Committee on New National Minimum Wage.

He said "Although we already have a position, we will meet tomorrow morning (Wednesday) to refine our stance before we are consulted. This is important for us."

Federal Government Resolution:

President Bola Tinubu will first consult with the 36 state governors and members of the organized private sector before concluding the figure that would finally be presented to the National Assembly on the new national minimum wage.

This was disclosed by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, while briefing men of the press on the outcome of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting held in the wake of this week and presided over by the President at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Idris disclosed that a memo on the report of the new minimum wage which was listed for discussion at the Cabinet meeting was consequently stepped down, explaining that it is a matter that has to do with the governors and the organized private sector.

According to the minister, it is after a wider consultation with the relevant stakeholders that the President would then forward a figure that would be the national minimum wage to the National Assembly.
