Mele Kyari: The Architect of Nigeria's Oil Production Resurgence

Razaq Ivori

.When Mele Kyari took the helm of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) in 2019, the oil sector was in shambles. Production had plummeted to 900,000 barrels per day, and the company was plagued by corruption and inefficiency. However, under Kyari's visionary leadership, NNPCL has achieved a remarkable turnaround.

In just five years, oil production has surged by 60,000 barrels per day, reaching 1.53 million barrels daily, including condensates. This impressive feat is a testament to Kyari's Transparency, Accountability, and Performance Excellence (TAPE) initiative, which has transformed the company's operations.

Kyari's impact extends beyond production numbers. He has also rescued companies like First E&P from financial ruin, providing critical funding and support to develop key fields. His leadership has earned praise from industry operators and enthusiasts alike, who hail him as a beacon of transparency and accountability.

Despite facing opposition from forces seeking to tarnish his reputation, Kyari remains committed to his vision. His achievements speak for themselves: published audited financial statements, monthly financial and operations reports, and instrumental roles in refinery rehabilitation.

As NNPCL's spokesman, Olufemi Soneye, noted, Kyari's assignment was clear: to turn around the company's fortunes. And he has done just that, leaving an indelible mark on Nigeria's oil sector. With profits soaring to N2.5 trillion in 2023, Kyari's legacy is cemented as a champion of transparency and excellence.
