Kaduna Tanker Collision Sparks Explosion, Four Hospitalised

Four people are receiving treatment at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Shika, after two tankers collided and exploded on Monday morning along the Zaria–Kaduna Expressway.

The crash, which occurred around 8:30am in the Dan Magaji area, involved a Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) tanker and an empty tanker. The LNG truck reportedly slammed into the rear of the other vehicle after a sudden tyre blowout, triggering a massive blaze.

Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Unit Commander in Zaria, Nasir Falgore, confirmed the incident, saying it caused major traffic disruption on the busy Kaduna–Kano route. He urged tanker drivers to carry out pre-trip checks, avoid speeding, and maintain safe distances when transporting hazardous cargo.

Federal Fire Service Area Commander Aminu Kiyawa said firefighters used specialised foam to control the LNG blaze. Three victims suffered burns from the explosion, while a fourth was rescued from the second tanker before all were taken to hospital.

Eyewitnesses described hearing an explosion “like a bomb blast,” with thick smoke visible from kilometres away. No fatalities were reported as of press time, but the incident adds to a growing list of tanker-related accidents on the Zaria–Kaduna highway in recent years.
