Jonathan Laments Culture of Betrayal in Nigerian Politics
Benin City, Edo State — Former President Goodluck Jonathan has decried what he described as a culture of betrayal and dishonesty in Nigeria’s political space, saying it has become rare to find allies who remain steadfast through changing times.
Jonathan made the remark in Benin City on Tuesday while delivering a goodwill message at the 70th birthday celebration of his former Chief of Staff and ex–Edo State deputy governor, Chief Mike Oghiadomhe.
The event drew several political heavyweights, including former governors Lucky Igbinedion, Osarhiemen Osunbor, Adams Oshiomhole, Ibrahim Dakwambo of Gombe State, and the current Edo deputy governor, Dennis Idahosa, who represented Governor Monday Okpebholo.
“Politics here is about betrayals”
Reflecting on his political journey, Jonathan praised Oghiadomhe as a rare figure in Nigerian politics who stood by him unwaveringly.
“I became president, then post-presidency, and one of the few friends who could give up their neck for me is Mike. In Nigerian politics, betrayal is common. You hardly find people who say the same thing in the morning and in the evening,” Jonathan said.
He recalled the 2015 election, during which he said he experienced the height of political betrayal, stressing that Oghiadomhe remained loyal and dependable even in turbulent times.
Tributes from colleagues
In his tribute, Edo deputy governor Dennis Idahosa lauded Oghiadomhe’s leadership record, noting that many of the foundations he laid during his time in office are still being followed in the state.
Former governor Lucky Igbinedion described Oghiadomhe as a trustworthy deputy during his administration, while Senator Adams Oshiomhole commended the celebrant’s loyalty to Jonathan, revealing that Oghiadomhe consistently declared that “wherever Jonathan is, that is where I would be.”
Oshiomhole also extended praise to Oghiadomhe’s wife, Louisa, for her steadfast support.
