Governors Establish Committees To Implement N70,000 Minimum Wage
"Governors Establish Committees to Implement N70,000 Minimum Wage
Following President Bola Tinubu's signing of the N70,000 Minimum Wage Law, several state governors have set up implementation committees to facilitate the new pay. However, others are awaiting the Nigeria Governors Forum's (NGF) stance, while some have expressed confidence in their ability to pay without retrenching workers.
In Kwara State, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has established a tripartite committee to determine the consequential adjustment component for other categories of workers. The committee comprises representatives from the state government, labor centers, and the private sector.
Similarly, in Plateau State, the government is examining its financial situation to ascertain its ability to pay the new minimum wage. Commissioner for Information and Communication Musa Ashoms stated that the state's monthly salary expenditure would increase from N2.9 billion to N5.9 billion, leaving only N2 billion for other projects and payments.
In contrast, the Imo State government has expressed its willingness to pay the N70,000 minimum wage, with Commissioner for Information Declan Emelumba stating that a mechanism has been established to secure funds for its implementation. Emelumba emphasized that the government does not intend to retrench workers but rather motivate them for optimal productivity."
