In a bold move toward a cleaner, more sustainable energy future, Dr. Zacch Adedeji, Chairman of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Initiative, has unveiled the 2025 workplan aimed at accelerating Nigeria’s adoption of alternative energy solutions.

The initiative, which emphasizes a “Focused Accelerated Deployment” strategy, aims to establish CNG and Electric Vehicles (EVs) as the cornerstones of Nigeria’s energy transition. Speaking at the unveiling event, Dr. Adedeji emphasized the government’s commitment to environmental sustainability and reducing dependency on traditional fuels.

“We aim to deliver Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Electric Vehicles for all-round Nigerian mobility,” Dr. Adedeji stated, reinforcing the initiative’s central goal. CNG is celebrated for its safety, affordability, and reduced environmental impact compared to conventional fossil fuels, making it an ideal choice for the nation’s energy shift.

The 2025 workplan outlines key priorities, including:

Expanding CNG infrastructure across the country.

Implementing robust regulatory and safety measures.

Mobilizing state and local governments to support the transition.

Educating Nigerians on the long-term benefits of adopting CNG and EV technologies.

The initiative is a critical component of the government’s response to the removal of fuel subsidies, which triggered sharp increases in fuel prices. As Nigerians face the economic impact of the policy, the push for cleaner, more affordable energy alternatives has become more urgent than ever.

“With CNG, we’re not only addressing the immediate need for cost-effective energy but also laying the foundation for a sustainable energy future,” said Engineer Michael Oluwagbemi, Chief Executive and Program Director of the initiative.

The 2025 plan aims to bring state and local governments on board, fostering nationwide collaboration for cleaner energy solutions. Additionally, it will prioritize educating citizens about the benefits of CNG and EV adoption, from cost savings to environmental preservation.

“This is not just about energy; it’s about the future of Nigeria’s mobility,” Dr. Adedeji explained. “By prioritizing CNG, we’re taking significant steps to mitigate environmental damage and reduce dependency on conventional fuels.”

The announcement comes at a pivotal time, as Nigeria grapples with the need for innovative solutions to its energy and environmental challenges. With ambitious goals set for the widespread adoption of CNG-powered vehicles and EVs, the 2025 CNG Initiative signals a transformative shift in Nigeria’s energy landscape.

As global interest in alternative energy surges, Nigeria’s commitment to CNG and EVs could set a new benchmark for African nations striving for sustainable development. For Dr. Adedeji and his team, the message is clear: the future is cleaner, safer, and powered by innovation.
