From Chicken Theft to Redemption: Pardoned Osun Convicts Set for Freedom Tomorrow

After years behind bars, Segun Olowookere and his collaborator, Sunday Morakinyo, convicted of chicken theft and armed robbery, are set to walk free. Documents for their release are expected to be finalized on Monday, paving the way for their return to their hometown, Okuku, by Tuesday at the latest.
The development follows a pardon granted by Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, who recently extended clemency to 53 inmates, including Olowookere and Morakinyo.
A Journey Toward Freedom
Monsurat Ajoke, convener of the Monsurat Ajoke Foundation and an advocate for Olowookere’s release, confirmed the update during an interview with Sunday Tribune.
“The moment the release documents are perfected, Segun will become a free man,” she stated, expressing gratitude to Governor Adeleke for the gesture.
The process of securing their freedom involves finalizing paperwork at the Lagos Maximum Prison, which faced delays during a previous attempt last Friday.
Redemption Behind Bars
Olowookere’s story is one of resilience and transformation. Despite his incarceration, he has made significant strides, pursuing a nursing education at the correctional center in Abeokuta.
“Segun has demonstrated exceptional resilience and determination,” Ajoke said. “He has chosen to study nursing, driven by a desire to acquire skills that will enable him to positively impact society upon his release.”
His exemplary behavior has earned commendation from correctional center authorities, marking a stark contrast to the circumstances that led to his imprisonment.
The Crime and Its Fallout
In November 2010, Olowookere and Morakinyo were arrested and later convicted on charges of conspiracy to commit armed robbery, armed robbery, and stealing. The Osun State High Court sentenced Olowookere to death on December 17, 2014.
Their case gained renewed attention recently when Olowookere’s mother appealed to Nigerians on social media, sparking widespread calls for clemency. Governor Adeleke responded by granting pardons to the pair and others, citing the need for justice and compassion.
A Second Chance
“Segun’s story is a testament to the human spirit’s capacity for growth, redemption, and transformation,” Ajoke said. “His journey serves as a powerful reminder that everyone deserves a second chance.”
As Olowookere and Morakinyo prepare to reintegrate into society, their release symbolizes hope and the potential for change, even in the face of adversity.
Their anticipated freedom marks the culmination of advocacy, resilience, and a governor’s commitment to justice, offering a new chapter for the two men—and a poignant message about redemption.
