FG Mourns Niger Boat Mishap Victims, Orders Nationwide Water Safety Campaign
Abuja — The Federal Government has expressed deep sorrow over the death of at least 32 people in a boat mishap in the Borgu area of Niger State, describing the tragedy as a fresh blow to communities still recovering from recent disasters.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said in a statement on Friday that the government received the news “with a heavy heart,” noting that the accident came barely four months after floods devastated Mokwa, another Niger community.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the victims, the government, and the people of Niger State. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those who have been affected by this tragedy,” Idris said.
Relief efforts underway
He assured that the Federal Government, through the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), would work with the Niger State Government to provide urgent support to survivors and families of the deceased.
The minister also commended the swift response of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, which he said ensured all passengers of the ill-fated boat were accounted for.
Safety first on waterways
Idris used the occasion to caution against neglecting safety protocols when travelling by water.
“No one should embark on a boat journey without a life jacket. Such simple precautions can make the difference between life and death,” he warned.
To curb further tragedies, the Federal Government has directed the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to launch a nationwide sensitisation campaign on inland waterway safety.
The minister prayed for the repose of the souls of the dead and wished the survivors a speedy recovery.
