FG Achieves 42% Milestone on Abuja-Keffi Road Expansion, Targets June 2026 Completion

By Achimi Muktar

The much-anticipated Abuja-Keffi road expansion is moving full steam ahead, with a remarkable 42% of work completed. The Federal Government has officially set a completion target of June 2026 for this crucial infrastructure project, promising to revolutionize travel and trade across Nigeria’s central region.

The announcement was made by Honourable Minister of State for Works, Bello Muhammad Goronyo, during a site inspection on Saturday, accompanied by Permanent Secretary, Engr. Olufunsho O. Adebiyi, and other top officials.

"This is a remarkable achievement, and we're on track to deliver the entire stretch from Abuja to Port Harcourt by June 2026," said Goronyo.

A Road That Will Transform Nigeria's Connectivity

Spanning 87.3 kilometers, the Abuja-Keffi-Akwanga-Lafia-Makurdi Dual Carriageway is one of Nigeria’s most significant infrastructure projects, designed to enhance regional connectivity and improve the flow of goods and services between key states. It will be a two-way, six-lane road, aimed at alleviating congestion, improving safety, and cutting travel times for millions of commuters.

This road forms part of the larger Abuja-Lafia-Makurdi-Enugu-Port Harcourt corridor, which is vital for economic growth, trade, and social mobility across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and neighboring states.

Speeding Toward Completion

Despite challenges, including high traffic volumes and dense urban areas, significant progress has been made. According to Engr. Yakubu Usman, the Federal Controller of Works for the FCT, 80% of work is already completed on the section, including site clearing, laying the stone base, and binder course. Construction on median drains and rigid shoulders is also well underway.

The work is strategically being carried out in phases, with some construction happening overnight to minimize disruption to daily commuters. The coordination with Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and other law enforcement agencies has ensured traffic flow remains smooth despite the ongoing work.

A Bright Future for Commuters

This road expansion is expected to drastically improve the travel experience for everyone using this critical route, cutting down hours of travel time and reducing the risk of accidents. With high-speed lanes and more space for vehicles, this will be a welcome relief for commuters and businesses alike.

Financial Backing for Timely Completion

The project is being supported by a special funding arrangement to ensure there are no financial hiccups along the way. Minister Goronyo assured that once payment claims are certified, the Ministry of Works will promptly process and release funds to keep the project moving forward.

The Project Manager for China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC), Mr. Ronald Liao, expressed confidence that the project will be completed on schedule, ensuring that the road is finished to the approved design specifications.

As Nigeria gears up for a transformed transportation network, the Abuja-Keffi expansion project stands as a beacon of hope for improved infrastructure, economic growth, and connectivity across the country.

Stay tuned for updates on this monumental project, which promises to change the landscape of travel in central Nigeria forever!
