FEC Approves Life Insurance Scheme to Secure Families of Deceased Civil Servants

By Achimi muktar

In a landmark move to strengthen social protection for public servants, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the Group Life Assurance Scheme for the 2025/2026 policy year, ensuring families of deceased civil servants, paramilitary personnel, and uniformed officers receive crucial financial compensation.

Speaking after the sixth FEC meeting of the year, Head of Service of the Federation, Mrs. Didi Walson-Jack, confirmed that the federal government will fully fund the scheme, which guarantees payouts to next-of-kin in the event of a public servant’s death.

A Safety Net for Nigeria’s Workforce
“This insurance policy ensures that in the unfortunate event of death, beneficiaries will receive financial support to cushion the economic shock,” Walson-Jack said. “It’s a commitment to protecting our workforce and their families.”

The policy covers high-ranking government officials including the President, Vice President, Ministers, Permanent Secretaries, and employees of federal ministries and agencies. It also includes officers in critical paramilitary agencies like the Nigeria Immigration Service, NSCDC, NDLEA, and FRSC, among others.

Strict Implementation: No Premium, No Cover
The scheme operates on a yearly basis and requires FEC approval before implementation. Coverage only takes effect once the government remits premiums to insurance firms—17 of which have been approved for the 2025/2026 cycle.

Boosting Morale Through Protection
This development comes at a time when public service morale is being tested. Just last week, Lagos State disbursed nearly N1 billion in death benefits to over 500 beneficiaries. Now, the federal government is sending a clear message: the welfare of public servants—and their families—matters.

With the newly approved Group Life Assurance Scheme, the government is not only offering financial protection but also reinforcing its broader commitment to employee welfare, economic resilience, and trust in public service.
