EFCC Cracks Down: 27 Officers Dismissed for Fraud and Misconduct in 2024

By Achimi Muktar

In a decisive move to uphold its integrity, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has dismissed 27 officers in 2024 over fraudulent activities and professional misconduct. The announcement, made in a statement by Dele Oyewale, Head of Media and Publicity, underscores the Commission’s unwavering commitment to a zero-tolerance policy on corruption within its ranks.

Integrity Under Scrutiny

The dismissals followed thorough investigations by the EFCC Staff Disciplinary Committee and were approved by the Executive Chairman, Ola Olukoyede. Highlighting the gravity of the issue, Oyewale stated, “The officers were dismissed for various offences bordering on fraudulent activities and misconduct. This underscores the Commission’s dedication to maintaining integrity and accountability within its ranks.”

The EFCC’s internal measures come amidst growing scrutiny of its workforce, reflecting its resolve to lead by example in Nigeria’s fight against corruption.

Bribery Allegations Under Investigation

In addition to the dismissals, the EFCC is actively probing allegations of a $400,000 bribe involving an unnamed staff member. Executive Chairman Olukoyede emphasized that no allegation against the Commission’s personnel will go uninvestigated, reinforcing the agency’s stance on transparency.

Public Warnings and Arrests

The EFCC also warned the public about impersonators exploiting the Chairman’s name to extort money. Recently, two suspects, Ojobo Joshua and Aliyu Hashim, were arraigned in Abuja for allegedly demanding $1 million from Mohammed Bello-Kaka, a former Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority, in exchange for leniency in a fabricated investigation.

“Olukoyede remains a man of integrity who cannot be influenced by monetary inducements,” the EFCC declared, urging the public to report any fraudulent activities tied to its operations.

Blackmail Attempts

The Commission further revealed that some suspects under investigation have resorted to blackmailing EFCC officers after failing to compromise them. Oyewale stated, “Such blackmail will not be tolerated and should be ignored by the public.”

A New Standard of Accountability

The dismissal of the 27 officers signals a bold step toward greater accountability within the EFCC, sending a clear message that corruption will not be tolerated—even among those tasked with combating it.

As the EFCC strengthens its internal and external operations, the spotlight remains on its resolve to maintain the highest standards of integrity in Nigeria’s fight against financial crimes.
