Delta Governor Oborevwori Slams Defection Rumors: 'I’m PDP, Through and Through

The Delta State government has put to rest swirling rumors suggesting Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Over the past three weeks, speculation about the governor’s political loyalty has dominated conversations, but officials have categorically debunked the claims.
The Rumors and the Response
Speaking at a press conference in Asaba on Monday, Charles Aniagwu, the State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads and Public Information), dismissed the defection rumors as baseless.
“Governor Sheriff Oborevwori is a proud member of the PDP and has no intention—now or in the future—of abandoning the party,” Aniagwu stated.
He emphasized the governor’s steadfast loyalty to the PDP, describing him as a "clear leader among leaders of the party in Nigeria." According to Aniagwu, Oborevwori remains focused on governance rather than political maneuvering.
Governance Over Politics
The governor’s current focus, according to Aniagwu, is delivering impactful projects to Deltans rather than engaging in political speculation.
“Governor Oborevwori’s primary concern is ensuring the dividends of democracy reach every Deltan. He is determined to respond to critics with results, not rhetoric, by delivering massive projects ahead of 2027,” Aniagwu explained.
While some misconstrued his cooperation with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a sign of political realignment, Aniagwu clarified that Oborevwori’s support for Tinubu is rooted in governance, not partisanship. “Collaboration with the federal government is about governance, not politics,” he said.
A Legacy of Development
Governor Oborevwori has been actively building on the projects initiated by his predecessor while launching new ones to enhance connectivity and development across Delta State. Among these are the Okpanam-Ibusa bypass, the Beneku Bridge, and the Asaba/Ughelli dual carriageway. Additionally, the construction of a six-story High Court Complex in Asaba is underway, alongside numerous other infrastructural initiatives.
Aniagwu praised Oborevwori’s efforts to foster unity and business opportunities by “building bridges of possibilities” that connect communities and promote interaction between neighboring areas.
Clearing the Air
Festus Ahon, the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, reiterated Aniagwu’s sentiments, stressing that Oborevwori’s allegiance to the PDP remains unshaken. The governor, he said, is not interested in political distractions but is committed to delivering a better Delta for all citizens.
As the state forges ahead under Oborevwori’s leadership, the governor’s camp hopes this definitive statement will put an end to the rumors and refocus attention on the administration’s developmental strides.
For now, Delta’s governor has made it clear: his commitment lies with the PDP and the people of Delta State. The politics, as he says, can wait.
