CSOs Are the Backbone of Democracy – Presidential Aide Sunday Dare Declares
By Achimi Muktar
In a passionate endorsement of civil society organizations (CSOs), Sunday Dare, Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication to the President, has emphasized their crucial role in strengthening democracy in Nigeria and beyond. Speaking during a visit from the National Civil Society Council of Nigeria (NCSCN) on Friday, Dare hailed the synergy between CSOs and the media as a powerful force that has shaped the country’s democratic journey.
Dare underscored the historic impact of this collaboration, recalling how the joint efforts of civil society groups and the media played a decisive role in dismantling Nigeria’s military rule. He argued that this same coalition remains vital in addressing contemporary national challenges, fostering unity, and ensuring sustainable governance.
“If the combined force of the media and organized civil society community could dislodge the mighty military government from Nigeria, imagine how much more they can achieve in shaping national unity and development,” Dare asserted.
The meeting, led by NCSCN Executive Director Blessing Akinlosotu, highlighted the ongoing role of CSOs in promoting democratic values, ensuring accountability, and advocating for the rights of citizens. Dare reaffirmed the government's commitment to engaging with these organizations, acknowledging their influence in fostering transparency, policy reforms, and good governance.
As Nigeria navigates the complexities of modern democracy, the collaboration between the media, CSOs, and government institutions will continue to shape the nation’s political and social landscape.
